Launch of Annual Appeal & Membership Drive

I have visited every single island historical society I know of, and the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society’s collection and its presentation is a ‘must visit,’ whether one is from Deer Isle or not. The bedrock character of the coast of Maine is personified here.”   Peter Ralston, renowned photographer and co-founder of the Island Institute, home to the Working Waterfront newspaper.

Deer Isle, Maine:  The Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society is launching its first Annual Appeal & Membership Drive since its founding in 1959.  To date, the Society has relied on membership revenues and modest donations to keep the lights on and the doors open.

“As wonderful as our volunteers and supporters have been over the years – most recently in realizing the completion of a successful capital campaign for the construction of the Exhibit Barn - we now need to focus on broadening our fundraising efforts to enable us continue collecting, preserving these historical legacies of Deer Isle for residents, visitors, students, and scholars,” said Susan Greenlaw, the Society’s president, in announcing the launch of this fall’s Annual Appeal and Membership Drive.

The goal of the drive is to increase operational funds to hire part time staff to manage the increasing administrative tasks needed to run the Society and enable the implementation of a much-needed digital program to document, preserve and maintain the sizable holdings of the Society.  “Digitization will not only ensure safe-keeping for generations to come, it will also allow us to readily offer access, share information and collaborate with other historical societies, island organizations, schools, and researchers interested in Deer Isle/Stonington history and culture,” explained Tinker Crouch, former president, current board member, and volunteer archivist.

The honorary Chairs leading this appeal are Hubert Billings, Linda Stratton, and Dr. William Haviland, all of whom are well-known on the island and long-time supporters of the Society. “We hope people on the island and people from away will support this appeal so we can continue to do the work we need to do and keep our history alive,” said Dr. Haviland.

In keeping with its mission of Honoring Island Culture, the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society remains committed to the collection of information, records, and historical objects documenting the ways of life through time in Deer Isle, Stonington and islands of East Penobscot Bay, Maine.
